Caribbean Poker Classic – Overview

The Caribbean Poker Classic is a poker tournament with a difference – not only does it take place on one of the largest passenger vessels known to man – the fabulous MS Freedom of the Seas – but CPC packages, worth in the region of $10 000, are up for grabs in a range of online poker rooms.

This literally means that anyone can take part in one of the more elite poker tournaments the world has to offer without paying out huge sums of money as a buy-in. There are generally two packages available, and the main package includes 7 nights accommodation, meal vouchers and a buy-in to the main event.

The tournament was floated in 2004 and it soon became one of the more popular events on the international poker diary. On-line poker players enjoyed the fact that the could qualify for an elite land-based, or should we say ocean-based, competition through online satellites, and over 70% of qualifiers in the inaugural event won their coveted CPC package online. Satellites for the 2008 CPC will take place from May onwards, so get online and get on board.

The unparalleled popularity of the event has seen the prize pool rise to lofty heights and in 2007 it hit the $1 million mark. The organisers have gone out of their way to make this a poker tournament of distinction, and last year the lucky qualifiers were flown in to the venue, the stunning island of St Kitts, on a private poker jet. The games had literally begun in the air, with on-board poker action, poker movies and top pros offering poker tips to the uninitiated! Now, they have taken to the seas, and all indications are that the 2008 event will top all others as far as the number of contestants involved and the consequential size of the prize pool.

In the past, the rich pot has lured some of the top ranked players in the world to the tables of St Kitts – Jennifer Tilly, 2004 WSOP champion and Robert Varkonyi, big-hitter of the WSOP in 2002 have enjoyed the Caribbean action.

The event began on the island of St Maarten and in 2005 it was decided to move the Classic to St Kitts and Nevis, located in the Leeward Islands of the West Indies. This year the event will be held on board one of the Royal Caribbean International cruise ships, the MS Freedom of the Seas, from the 16 – 23 November 2008.

In 2007 Brian Jensen from Denmark clinched the main event and pocketed over $237 000, but it was not only the top players who walked away with a little cash to spend in the tropical island paradise – the bottom six players were all rewarded for their efforts with a rather tidy $7 750 – not bad for a week at the beach!
